What Is a Fractional Marketing Partner, Anyway?
When I tell people I'm a fractional marketing partner, I usually get a polite nod.
Then a pause.
Fair enough. It's not a term most people use day to day. You could even argue that any marketer who isn't on your payroll is "fractional." An agency works with plenty of clients at once, after all.
So here's what it means to me, and why I think it fills a gap a lot of small businesses are stuck in.
The gap
If you run a small business and you want help with marketing, you've usually got three options.
You can hire an agency. That's usually money well spent. Agencies have talented people in dedicated roles, all focused on supporting their clients. It's top-quality work, but it comes with a price tag in the thousands every month. And rightfully so. But for most small businesses, that's just not realistic.
You can hire someone full-time. But you may not have enough work to fill the role, and you probably can't afford an experienced marketer anyway. Maybe a kid with an iPhone, but a lack of experience isn't going to elevate your marketing game much.
You could turn to AI for all your marketing needs. Why that isn't a good idea is a conversation for another day.
Or you can do it yourself. Which, as I wrote about in Why Marketing Is Always the First Thing to Slide, usually means it doesn't get done.
That's the gap. Marketing limbo. You know you need help, but none of the usual options fit.
A fractional partner sits right in the middle.
A Swiss Army knife for your business
My biggest strength isn't one thing. It's range.
I've spent over two decades in business, in a lot of different roles. Warehousing. B2B sales. Wholesale. Sales management. Operations management. The non-profit world. On the creative side, I do strategy, social, design, photography, video, podcasts and more.
I'm genuinely capable across a lot of it: photography, video, design, social, and the basics of paid ads and SEO. But I'll be straight with you. For any one of those, you could surely find someone more specialized than me. I'm not the perfect tool for any one job.
What I can do is cover all of it. And when I need something I don't have yet, I learn it.
I've always been that way. I taught myself graphic design because I wanted to design my own book cover and create my own clothing. So I learned.
The same goes for clients. Take Ches's.
When I started with them, I was making content from a small handful of stock images. It worked for a while, but before long I realized I wasn't equipped to serve them properly. Ches's has been feeding this province for almost 75 years. That business needed storytelling. It needed real images.
So I invested. I moved from my phone to a proper camera and decent lenses. I taught myself photography. I bought the software. I did what needed to be done to represent them the way they deserved.
That's one of my favourite parts of the work. I love learning, and I'm grateful to have clients who are happy to be my learning ground. As they grow, I grow with them.
Embedded, not outsourced
That's what fractional marketing looks like to me. It's truly embedded.
It feels like I work for you, not with you.
You can talk operations with me, and I can talk back. I know what a staff shortage does to your week and why the budget is tight this month. We can talk about your marketing at ground level, based on what's actually happening in your business, not what it looks like on paper.
Why a retainer makes sense
I'm always open to one-off projects, and some of those have been my favourite things to work on. But if you're stuck in marketing limbo, having someone like me on retainer is the smarter move.
My focus can shift on the fly. A big event pops up, we pivot. Something isn't working, we change it. We're not locked into a fixed list of deliverables, and we're not renegotiating every time your priorities change.
You just have someone in your corner who knows your business and keeps things moving.
So, what is it?
A fractional marketing partner is someone who joins your business part-time, learns how it actually works, and handles whatever your marketing needs at the time. Strategy one week. Photos the next. A menu, a campaign, a podcast.
I'm not the best tool for any one job.
But I'm the one you'll keep reaching for.
If any of this sounds familiar, I'd love to hear what you're working on. Let's talk.
